John Heigham Steggall was a most remarkable man, if his autobiography is anything to go by. First published in 1857, it tells of his life as a gipsy, a surgeon, a salior, a soldier, and finally as a parish priest. For most of his ninety years, he lived in the villages of central Suffolk, but he also visited India and the South Seas as well as Bury Goal.
